The 1 oz gold Krugerrand was minted for the first time in 1967 to help promote South African gold to the international markets. A particular feature of the Krugerrand is, that it has no nominal value and nonetheless is legal tender in the Republic of South Africa.
The distinctive reddish hue of this gold coin is a typical feature, attributed to a copper alloy that enhances the gold's hardness and durability, resulting in a fineness of 916.7/1000.
The obverse showcases a portrait of Paul Kruger, a former South African politician and president, with the inscriptions SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA encircling the image.
The reverse of the coin features a springbok. The Springbok was designed by Kurt Steinberg and is one of the national symbols of South Africa. In addition to the springbok, the year ("2023"), name ("Krugerrand") and weight ("Fyngoud 1 Oz Fine Gold") are stamped on the reverse side. The motif is completed with a ring of small round dots, which can also be seen on the side of the Krugerrand with the motif.
