Initially released in 2006, the Gold American Buffalo was the first pure 24-karat gold coin to be produced for the public by the US Mint. It was originally made to compete with foreign 24K gold coins taking the world by storm. The Gold American Buffalo continues to be extremely popular today!
The obverse displays the profile of a Native American man, facing right, designed by American sculptor James Earle Fraser. The inscriptions include an “F” for Fraser, the word “LIBERTY” and the year.
The reverse features the American Bison, which is commonly referred to as the American Buffalo in both the US and Canada. This misnomer became the accepted term for these animals indigenous to the North American continent. Inscriptions include “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “IN GOD WE TRUST”, and “$50” as well as the weight and purity.
