The American Gold Eagle series has been annually issued by the U.S. Mint since 1986. For the first thirty-five years of release, the coin was minted with a consistent design. In mid-2021, the Mint replaced the Type-1 Family of Eagles design with the Type-2 Eagle Portrait design, now the standard of the series, which features a new rendition of the national bird on the reverse, with enhancements to the design elements on the obverse that reflect the integrity of the original bronze cast.

The obverse depicts Lady Liberty surrounded by fifty stars, as she steps forward carrying an olive branch of peace and a torch of enlightenment in her outstretched arms. Stylized sunlight radiates in the background, above the dome of the U.S. Capitol building. Inscriptions include "LIBERTY," "2023" and the artist's monogram "ASG." This timeless allegorical homage to Liberty first appeared on the 1907 Gold Double Eagle coin designed by award-winning sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens.

The head of an eagle is illustrated on the reverse, with its intense gaze focused towards the left. Inscribed "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "50 DOLLARS" and "1 OZ. FINE GOLD." The eagle portrait is the first U.S. Mint coin design created by graphic artist Jennie Norris, an Arizona based member of the U.S. Mint's Artistic Infusion Program.

The American Gold Eagle coins are available in four different sizes, containing 1/10, 1/4, 1/2 or 1 oz of fine gold. All four sizes in 2023 feature the same new design and are fully guaranteed for their metal content and purity by the United States government.
