The twelve-part Lunar series features an annually changing motif representing the Chinese zodiac signs. As a result, each zodiac sign repeats only after twelve years, appearing with a new design in this cycle. The initial release of the Lunar Dragon occurred in the year 2000 when the price of one ounce of gold was 307.68 euros. Since then, not only has the price of gold significantly increased, but also the value of the Lunar Dragon gold coins from the Perth Mint.
The obverse side depicts a serpent-shaped dragon surrounded by clouds and hovering over a sea. The elements of water and wind are present on the coin's obverse side because, according to Chinese mythology, the dragon resides in the water during winter and ascends to the sky in early summer. This period coincides with China's long rains and harvest time. Hence, it's not surprising that the dragon in China is associated with positive qualities such as luck, kindness, and intelligence.
Similar to the Lunar I and Lunar II series, the Chinese character for the dragon is visible. Below it is written "DRAGON 2024." The small mintmark with the number "P125" represents the Perth Mint and its 125th anniversary, which this globally renowned manufacturer celebrates in 2024.
The reverse features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by artist Jody Clark. The inscription around it includes the words "ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA," the weight and fineness "1/4oz 9999 Au," and the coin's face value "25 DOLLARS." Additionally, the reign of the British Queen is indicated on the obverse side as "1952 - 2022."
